Affectionately known as the ‘Noise Oscars’ and now in their 9th year, the John Connell Awards are presented at an annual reception hosted by the Noise Abatement Society at the House of Commons.

The John Connell Local Authority Award 2009
Controlling excessive and unwanted noise in the community is one of the many tough responsibilities of the Environmental Health Practitioner. Local Authorities, through the dedication of their Environmental Health Teams, are continually challenged to demonstrate imaginative and sustainable initiatives in the management of noise issues.
The John Connell Local Authority Awards recognise services, campaigns and schemes concerning noise that are shining examples of: community co-operation, noise education and creative solutions
Winner: London Borough of Haringey Temporary Accommodation and Mental Health
Highly Commended: Kirklees Council Partnership Solutions to Noise Problems
Highly Commended: Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council New Out of Hours Noise Service
Highly Commended: Westminster City Council The Proactive Noise Team
The John Connell Innovation Award 2009
The John Connell Innovation Award, established in 2000, encourages the development of new schemes to resolve noise pollution problems and recognises a pioneering approach that addresses this issue from a unique standpoint.
Winner: Sharps Redmore Partnership PA solution for the Brit Oval
Highly Commended: Arup Acoustics Recital Hall, King’s Place London
The John Connell Technology Award 2009
This award recognises the crucial role that industry plays in the reduction of noise pollution and the positive impacts that result. Often technology that reduces noise will contribute to other environmentally responsible solutions.
Winner: Thermo King SLX Low Noise diesel refrigeration unit
Highly Commended: Ricardo UK WAVE simulation software
John Connell Silent Approach™ Award 2009
To this end, NAS will be recognising significant achievements in the area of quiet transport operations. Its Silent Approach™ award recognises significant initiatives to reduce the impact of delivery noise during the day but especially at night. This is a mounting concern especially in relation to large infrastructure projects.
This year’s winners will show that it is possible and cost effective to address noise pollution issues during planning stages of large infrastructure projects and set requirements that are cost effective, often saving time and valuable resources, and do not disturb local residents.

In recognition of our founder, John Connell OBE, and the significant role of NAS in driving forward campaigns and solutions to solve noise pollution issues, this year we will honour key individuals who have made outstanding contributions to this cause.
